She was born in Chandigarh. Her parents run a successful business empire. She has one elder brother. She has always enjoyed living with her close knit family. She did her masters in Marketing and International business from Mumbai. She graduated in Business administration. Jonita finished her schooling from St. Stephens, Chandigarh, with medical subjects.
Jonita entered into films without any background or references. Being an actress happened by chance as opportunities just kept pouring in for her. Her parents were extremely supportive in her decision for acting in films. She received no formal training in acting. She owes her success in the industry to her determination and integrity. Her first film was Chak Jawana opposite the most popular face of the film and Music fraternity, Gurdas Mann. She got critically acclaimed for her role in the film. Besides working in Punjabi films she has also made her name through South Indian films like Makkal Padai and Adhikaram. The genres of films she has worked in are vast ranging from Comedy, romantic, action thrillers and a lot more. According to her Kollywood and Bollywood are not separate entities.
